The French region of Alsace forms the border between France and Germany. It is protected from the rains coming from the Atlantic ocean on the West by the Vosges mountain range, and its northern location offers a semi-continental climate. Vine has been cultivated there for centuries, and the Alsace wine was already known during the Roman era. During the Middle-Ages, its fine wines were exported to Northern Europe through the Rhine River. The vineyard declined during the war of the 17th century and was left devastated. It is only after the First and mostly after the Second World War that it regained its former glory, consecrated by the registration of the Appellation of Origin «Alsace» in 1962.
